SEO for eCommerce

Google, Bing, Yahoo etc etc. Search is still the primary way that potential customers find, research and shop for purchases, by quite a big margin actually. And even with the rise in recommendations via social networks and social media, search is still used to then find the best price or a reputable retailer, or reinforce the recommendation of any brand online.

So having your products & website rank as highly as possible in search engine results is an extremely good thing, and can make a huge difference to the amount that you take in at the checkout desk. In the case of top supermarkets and stores, ranking just one or two places higher can make a difference of millions to their profits, particularly if they are in the ‘top three’ results for a specific search, as those results get 70% of all of our clicky fingers. No longer virgins – our first website award!

JAMJO Design are pleased to announce that our site Small Business Can has won a gold award for best website or micro-site at the prestigious CIPR Pride awards. Since we launched the site back in march it has steadily grown in popularity and emerged as one of the fastest growing online small business networks in Ireland and the UK today. A tear comes to our eyes when we see our babies grow up!

The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Northern Ireland awards were held in the Europa Hotel, Belfast last week.

Some of the SBC team were on hand to pick up the award in front of an audience of more than 200 business people.

The panel of judges were very impressed by the site saying:

“This is a good example of marketing to a customer base through an online channel. Relationship building is nstrated in a clear and easy way using a light-touch with customers, who feel comfortable about owning the forums and discussing issues online. The success of the website can be seen in the number of visitors it attracts and the number of people registering each day. Clearly it appeals to its target audience. The amount of time spent by visitors on the site shows that the content is interesting, and the number of comments posted shows that visitors are engaging with the content.” Read More…

We will tee off very very soon with a beta version. This will be quickly followed with some extra cool features. In the meantime you can sign up for an invite.

Using technology wisely is sweet work

(The following article is from our writeup in the Sunday Business Post)

Start-ups in the new media sphere must be flexible and adaptable when developing their business model, according to James O’Sullivan, coowner of website developer JamjoDesign.

‘‘In our business, there is no revenue model that you can write down and follow each time,’’ said O’Sullivan. ‘‘In most cases, our revenue would come from the build stage. However, we do small bits of maintenance on an  ongoing basis for different clients. We also have sites which would need significant maintenance and new content every month.’’

Development Lifecycle

Jon Carroll, O’Sullivan’s partner, said that the evolving nature of web technologies helped the company to build a viable, commercial relationship with clients. ‘‘We learned a very important thing as our business grew. On the web today, the development lifecycle does not end at a launch date,’’ said Carroll.

‘‘We put in social media tools such as a blog, Twitter feeds, a Facebook group and all those tools that help the user to promote themselves. With Google going with live search and social search, company sites that are not updated with new content each week will not get the web traffic they deserve. The day of the static brochure site is gone.’’ Established in 2007, JAMJO Design is based in Cork. The company is a tight operation with few operating costs.

Keeping overheads low

‘‘The trick for any start-up is to keep overheads low and thankfully the nature of our work involves very few overheads,’’ said O’Sullivan. ‘‘We do at times outsource certain work to developers, illustrators or photographers, but most stuff is done inhouse.’’ In addition to developing sites, Jamjo also provides print and other media services. ‘‘We have a four-step approach to projects define, design, develop, refine so we see ourselves as web designers, web developers and also marketing consultants,’’ O’Sullivan said.

Jamjo has worked withmore than 100 clients in the past three years. It has just launched a new version of the business networking site SmallBusinessCan.com, which is supported by Ulster Bank. ‘‘It is a business networking platform, allowing users to openly share their knowledge and experience with other like-minded small businesses and entrepreneurs in a friendly online environment,’’ said Carroll.

Simple social web tools

‘‘Engagement platforms such as this provide simple social web tools to help people help each other.’’ Jamjo hopes to build up a global network of expert consultants to advise on projects. ‘‘We are talking with some talented people in London and theUS about building relationships,’’ said O’Sullivan.

‘‘Because the web is ultimately global, and our clients will want to have a global reach and feel,we would like to have a reach beyond the island of Ireland.’’ O’Sullivan advised new companies launching websites to use Web 2.0 tools to get the most from their online presence. ‘‘Companies such as sustainable packaging supplier Down to Earth Materials are blogging about the Electric Picnic and who the cool bands are, but they are selling sustainable products,’’ he said. ‘‘They are connecting their green business activity with their interest in music and creating a lot of activity on their Facebook page and company website.

RSS in Plain English!!

We are not sure who many times we are asked to explain RSS feeds or Really Simple Syndication, but it had to have been more than twice in the last few years!!! :) So before I post the following video I would like to say YES this explanation is slightly annoying but its still the easiest video explanation of RSS! out their in my humble opinion. Of course every website today should be pushing there content out to users so this is a must have……….

Stop using IE6, Says Microsoft :)

Finally Microsoft is beginning to pull the plug on IE6. Google gets hacked, by cyber criminals in China, and Microsoft has acknowledged that their Internet Explorer browser was part of the problem – at least someone owns up to things these days!!! Specifically, Internet Explorer Version 6 was part of the problem, and Microsoft is quick to point out that version 8 is much better, and much more secure. Cliff Evans, Microsoft’s Head of Security and Privacy in the UK used these words not us:)

It has been coming and is good news for all website development in future years. Don’t get me wrong way back in 2001 IE6 was a great little browser and pulled everyone along with it but it’s certainly being laid to rest in the coming year or even months. Youtube and Google have been phasing out support for the browser as of late. Youtube has simply followed in the footsteps of Digg which has been hinting at cutting away from IE6 for a long time now.

When the day eventually arrives we will be having a little party at Jamjo HQ, all invited….
